Pad Krapao: Thai Food Culture in One Dish

Pad Krapao (Thai Basil Stir-fry) is one of Thailand’s most popular dishes. It looks simple, but Thai people often have strong opinions about how it should be cooked.

The style shown here is a dry-style Pad Krapao made with minced meat, Thai basil, garlic, and chili — without extra vegetables like long beans or onions. It is often served with a crispy fried egg with a soft yolk.

Different Styles of Pad Krapao

  • Dry style – less sauce, stronger flavor
  • Saucy style – more sauce to mix with rice
  • Minimal style – only meat, basil, garlic, chili
  • With vegetables – long beans, onions, bell peppers
